VOX-Pol Post-Conference Workshop Summaries

VOX-Pol’s post-conference workshops will take place in Amsterdam on 22 August 2018, following on from the third biennial conference which will take place at the University of Amsterdam on 20 – 21 August 2018.

Previous VOX-Pol pre-/post-conference workshops have included workshops on Python for Social ScientistsInternet Research Ethics for Violent Extremism & Terrorism ResearchersHuman Reasoning Meets Machine Learning.

A number of ‘hands on’ workshops on research tools and methods for scholars of violent online political extremism will be held on the morning and afternoon of Wednesday, 22 August.

Places on these workshops will be limited, and more details on how to register will be published soon. Workshop attendance is free but general conference registration is a required.

TITLE CONVENORS DESCRIPTOR
Python for Social Scientists

Prof. Padraig Cunningham (University College Dublin) This workshop will provide an introduction to Python and Python Notebooks for Social Scientists. At the end of the workshop participants will have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of Python and will be able to manipulate numeric and text data in Python. The workshop will have a practical focus – participants will develop and extend a number of Python Notebooks during the workshop.
Researching Violent Extremism, Terrorism and the Internet: Ethics Issues

Prof. Maura Conway (Dublin City University)

Prof. Elizabeth Buchanan (University of Wisconsin)

This half-day workshop will focus on the ethical issues raised when conducting Internet-mediated extremism and terrorism research. In particular, there will be a focus on how to use available ethics guidelines, and policies and practices to safeguard the well-being of researchers in this area.
Introduction to VOX-Pol Tools Dr. Matti Pohjonen (SOAS) This workshop will introduce participants to the analytic tools developed by VOX-Pol for the collection and analysis of data for violent online political extremism research. Interactive tutorials will include the collecting of text data using social media APIs, text analytics including sentiment analysis and topic classification, and video analytics.
Social Network Analysis Dr. Jonathan Bright (University of Oxford) This workshop will build on the introduction to Python workshop by looking at how network analysis tasks can be performed within the Python programming framework. We will examine some real examples based on data from social media platforms and explore how basic network metrics can be calculated. Participants will work with ipython notebooks and modify existing code during the course of the workshop.
Focus Group on Future Research Dr. Dounia Mahlouly (ICSR) This focus group will be an opportunity for scholars and practitioners engaged in the debate on violent online political extremism to highlight the challenges facing the field and identify gaps for future research.
